The cornea is the front lens of the eye that allows light to pass through to the interior part of the eye, which enables us to see clearly. A normal cornea is clear and light is able to pass through it. However, this is not the case when someone has a corneal disease or condition. Corneal diseases and conditions can be devastating to your eye sight. Corneal disease causes cloudiness, distortion of vision and if left untreated it will eventually lead to blindness. That’s why it is critical that you see our West Bronx optometrist at Urban Eyes to get examined right away if you have any symptoms or vision problems. When you our practice, you will get a comprehensive eye exam which would include a thorough corneal disease evaluation in order to receive an accurate diagnosis.

Eye Infections West Bronx

There are several types of corneal diseases and conditions. Some different types include but are not limited to: keratitis, dystrophy and allergies. When you come to Urban Eyes, Our West Bronx optometrist will test you for many corneal diseases and will discuss possible treatment options that are appropriate for your circumstances and specific condition. Keratitis refers to the inflammation of the cornea. There are many potential causes of keratitis. Some possible causes include: dry eyes, various infections, injury, underlying medical conditions and in some cases the cause is unknown. Infection is the most common and frequent cause of keratitis. The infection can be caused by when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasitic organisms enter the cornea. Physical or chemical traumas and allergies are also frequent causes of keratitis. Symptoms of keratitis include: reduced visual clarity, corneal discharge and extreme pain. Keratitis varies in severity and longevity- (can be mild to severe, chronic or acute).

Corneal dystrophy is another corneal condition which causes the cornea to lose its normal clarity due to a buildup of cloudy material. There are over 20 different types, however they all share the following traits: usually inherited, affect both eyes equally, not caused by external factors (ex: diet, injuries), most develop gradually, most begin in one corneal layer later spread to others, most don’t affect other parts of the body (aren’t related to diseases of other body parts) and most can occur in overall healthy people. Allergies can also cause corneal conditions. Allergies affect the eyes in general (pollen, etc). Redness, tearing, burning and watery discharge are common symptoms. Thankfully, allergies are usually not serious enough to require medical attention.
